It is a gorgeous day today here in sunny LA! I am sooooo stoked that I am off today, I can’t even tell you! I woke up feeling super refreshed and ready to take on the day. I managed to sleep in till 6:30. Kind of unheard of for me. No joke. Lol. No yoga this morning. I’ve got other workout plans for later;)
I met up with Haley this morning instead for a lovely lil breakfast date at Le Pain Quotidien.

This place is an absolute hotspot. They have quite a few here in Cali, and I gotta say, EXTREMELY fresh food and generous portions. You can’t help but be enamored by all of the baked muffins, tartines, pastries and loaves of fresh baked breads. Ok….this is all veryyyyyy tempting to me. Ugh.
It all looks soooooo delicious! I’m a lucky girl that this place is walking distance to my house.

This is what healthy chicks do…lol. We salivate over all the baked goods, the…end up ordering egg white omelettes. Lol. Hahaha. Seems like a very simple breakfast, but you’d be surprised how many places manage to fuck this up. Also the little things reallydo count for me. For example… They set the table with fresh sea salt and fresh pepper, organic strawberry jam, and my fave, praline butter. Omggggg.

After feeling pretty full, but still comfortable, I laid on the couch and studied my crazy ass choreography for my Zumba class. I’ve got a new song on the playlist that makes me loose my head! Loving this song right now!

I had loads of energy…I forgot to mention I took a scoop full of C4 by Cellucor mixed with water before class, and I was unstoppable! Omg.
Anything that has the words “extreme” or “explosive” is bound to be fuckin GNARLY. Excuse my French. This is not something I take on a normal basis, bit it’s fun sometimes for that extra drive in your workouts. I’m sure it’s not the most “natural” product out there….but hey:/

After my hour Zumba class…my adrenaline was still cray cray, so I stopped at LA Fitness and busted out today’s GPP FITNESS WOD.

Check it out. It was pretty intense. I had to modify the weight and did 10 lbs instead of 15lbs.
My last round of the sets, I couldn’t step anymore. I had to do the last whole round stationary. Ahhhhh, sooo tired! Lots of child pose happening at the moment of completion. Lol

Lunch was nothing exciting to share. Plain chicken breast, a coconut flour pancake, and some veggies.

I’m trying to be super clean for the day, cuz tonight….ohhhh watch out. I’m meeting up with the girls from my old job (Sassoon) at our old stomping grounds;) Nic’s Martini Lounge. We go just a tad bit overboard on happy hour. I’m saving my naughty tummy for all those stupid delicious appetizers and wine. Hence….the double workout today. Lol. Stop judging, I know you can’t revisit a goooooood happy hour! C’mon!
Made it to Nic’s, and because of the lighting…couldn’t get a decent pic of me to save my life. This is as good as it’s gonna get y’all.

Missing my assistants to the max! All dressed in black. I love it. So Gaga. These kids are amazing! Some, for two years straight assisting, just to get the chance of being a “Sassoon trained stylist or colorist. I remember those days. It was my life. Looking for people (hair models) on the street willing to get their hair cut off by an aspiring stylist. It’s a lesson in dedication, patience, and tolerance. Not easy, so.. I commend them for working as hard as they do. Now, at my new salon, not having hired an assistant yet…I am now starting to realize how much important they are for the running of the salon. In fact, I’m a bit crazed without one. Call me snobby…bu I’m used to someone being right there if I drop my comb.

We had a GREAT time! We ate and drank like cows. Like…not kidding. Not a single vegetable was served. Yeah, this pic below…..not even the 1/2 of it. Lol. All carbs. Fries…pizza..olive bread…quesadillas…shrimp cocktail..more fries… Ugh. I was sick by the end of the night. Looks like yoga at 6:30 A.M will have to be pushed back till after work. Oooops.
I’m really good at making up for it though…lol. Lots of juicing and protein for the next few days, along with back to back days of workouts. Gotta get back on it! Just because you had one really bad meal….doesn’t mean the world is over, and your fucked. It just means, you enjoyed it for that moment, and you pick it back up the next day with full motivation, strength, and without punishing yourself.

Hello lovelies!! Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA on the posts lately, but life has been super busy. I know, no excuses! Well, at least I make it a really great one when I do. I’ve got some amazing recipes coming up in the next week, so please be on the lookout;)

I’ve been playing around with baking using protein powder lately (I am loving this one) and since I wake up so inhumanly early, I decided to whip something up.
I was attempting to make berry protein muffins using my new fave protein powder….and ummmmm…. My dumb ass forgot to grease the muffin tins…

After scarfing down a couple of those muffins, I needed to move my body… I grabbed my iPad to check my WOD on GPP Fitness.

My friend and I decided that was just too beautiful of a morning to not hit the mountain for a hike. This would be the “cardio” portion of my day. This amazing spot, little did I know, is location 10 freakin minutes from my house! WTF! How have I never been here!? 20130610-223113.jpg

This hidden gem is called Franklin Canyon. Easy to get to but not crowded. The BEST! If you live near, you need to go…btw, make sure to come to a COMPLETE stop at the stop sign, they will send you a ticket in the mail. Say cheese!;)

We took Willy, who chased absolutely everything. So annoying, but he needed to get his workout in. There were lizards, squirrels, ducks, rabbits…..

This place is stunning! I felt like I was, I don’t know…..somewhere definitely OTHER than LA! For sure going back. It wasn’t the type of hike that was not too strenuous, but we still got our sweat on. We power walked the shit outta that place! Lol

Around 11 am, we headed to one of our local favorite breakfast spots, Sweet Butter. In Sherman Oaks, on Ventura. We sat at one of the outdoor tables, and enjoys iced lattes:)

I ordered a bomb ass veggie omelette… Egg whites filled with roasted corn, and chard roiled asparagus, yellow squash, and tomatoes. Obsession. Yes, I ate the grain toast…and it was perfect!

Our spread….our friend Yasuna met up with us. So, no…. It wasn’t just the two of us gettin’ down on 3 platefuls of food. Lol.
But…..girl gurrrrl was hungrrrryyyy!

It’s 12:30.. And that is a skinny 5 calorie margarita in my hand, duh. It’s freakin summer.

Finally I am getting some much needed VITAMIN D! It ended up damn hot in the valley, and luckily my girlfriend’s got a pool in her complex;)

We laid out..jumped in the pool a bunch, drank Margie’s, read the latest food and health mags, and munched on fresh berries, grapes, and nectarines. Honestly, couldn’t have ask for more this Monday. As I flipped through the pages of Martha Stewart Living, whilst burning my buns, I stopped at this page, and gawked.

I put this together in no time! Pretty much ransack your fridge….and platter that shit.lol.

Here’s what we’ve got here:

* Hard boiled eggs

* Salami

* Romaine drizzled with blood orange olive oil, champagne vinegar, and pecorino.

* Green Spanish olives

* Leftover lemon,thyme, garlic baked salmon

* Leftover grilled peppercorn pork

* Pesto Zucchini, avocado salad

* Roasted mini red, orange, and yellow peppers

* Sautéed baby Broccoli with crushed garlic and olive oil.

OMGGGGGG….. never have I ever. Yummmmmmm

This dinner was special! Yasuna, (on the left) has finally passed her creative presentation! That is how it works when working for Sassoon. Once you qualify as a stylist ( apprenticeship can be 1 1/2 yrs- 2 1/2 yrs) you then, 6 months later, have to come up with a “Final” creative presentation.

* Wardrobe
* Make up

This is not an easy task. Finding models on the street that are willing to let you do whatever you want to their hair is HARD! oh, and did I mention, for no pay! Yeah, very hard to pull off. This process pretty much takes over your life for a good chunk of time.

Pesto Zucchini Ribbons with Snap peas and Avocado
 
Prep time

Total time

 

A gorgeous summer salad loaded with superfoods and amazing flavor!
Author:
Serves: 4

Ingredients
  • 2 thinly sliced zucchini ribbons (i used a mandolin)
  • 2 tbsp organic pesto
  • A handful of sugar snap peas (still in shell) cut into pieces on the diagonal
  • ½ an avocado cut into little squares
  • ⅛ small sweet onion (thinly sliced on mandolin)
  • ½ lemon
  • Salt and fresh ground pepper
  • Drizzle of olive oil

Instructions
  1. Mandolin zucchini and onion. Place in a bowl.
  2. Add in pesto, lemon, and toss all three together.
  3. Add in cut snap peas & avocado . Toss.
  4. Serve and dress with olive oil and salt & pepper.

TGIF! That means….one more day before the weekend, which means, one more day till I’m in VEGAS! Ok, I must be tell you….I’ve never been such a Vegas fan. It’s always reminded me of a dirty place where people go and do naughty things, and get away with it with a simple, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…” But, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to appreciate the space, the lights, the food, the architecture, and the beauty behind the trashiness;) needless to say..I need a mini vacation!

I didn’t sleep very well last night due to the sound of pouring rain, the new mattress, and the lack of blankets, in which I realize now, are too small for my new big bed, but im hoping to have a relaxing, fun, spa weekend to revamp, and go into next week feeling amazing!

Anyway… Before I take off, I wanted to share this fabulous little recipe with you guys as I promised on my instagram last week. This recipe was inspired by one of my favorite bloggers, ProteinPow.

Ok, so, before you get all cookin’ cray cray, I wanted to share with y’all some must have baking staples that are always at an arms reach in my low carb kitchen. Click the “pin” button below to share this grocery baking list, and share the wealth;)

Mini Blueberry Protein Muffins

I had 3 this morning. Lol. Delish.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup of liquid egg whites

1/4 cup of rolled oats

1/4 cup of vanilla whey protein isolate

1 tbsp of coconut flour

1 tsp of xylitol or erythritol (optional for a sweeter muffin)

1/2 tsp of baking powder

1 tbsp 0% Greek yogurt, fromage blanc or low fat cottage cheese

1 tbsp mashed banana.( you could even use mashed sweet potato too;)

Fresh or frozen blueberries ( a handful)

A couple of things:
Before getting into the assembly of this recipe, I gotta tell ya, if you don’t have vanilla whey, it’s ok. You can use unflavored and just add a dash of vanilla extract, and add the optional sweetener.

Also, add your blueberries last, otherwise, you’ll end up with blue muffins;)

DIRECTIONS:

Pre-heat oven to 320 degrees
Grease a mini muffin pan. My recipe ended up making 7 minis. I guess it depends on the pan how many you end up with.
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, then add your wet ingredients.
I used my vitamix to quickly blend ingredients, but you could also use a hand mixer or any blender.
Do not fill to the top, leave room to rise.
Cook at 320 degrees for 15-20 mins. Check at 15, may need more time. Every oven is different.

nutrition facts:
Cals per muffin (1 out of seven) 45 cals
Carbs per muffin: 3.5 grams
Protein per muffin: 5.5 grams
Fat per muffin: 1 gram
Fiber: 2.5 grams

Well, you know what day it is!! It’s WHAT I ATE WEDNESDAY.
I hope you guys found yesterday’s get fit post helpful and informative to start your new healthy lifestyle!

Last night’s ZUMBA class was on fire! I burned 600 calories, and of course when I got out, all I could think about, was how I had nothing left in fridge for my weekly meal plan! You know how they say, never go grocery shopping hungry…. Well, I raided Trader Joes like an animal. I didn’t really eat dinner before class, so my tummy was rummmmmbling. I even broke open a pack of walnuts as I was shopping around, cuz I just couldn’t take it anymore! Lol

I recently decided to incorporate Casein Protein into my diet, and have been playing around with different ways to enjoy it. Actually, a lot of the ideas I’ve found, have been on Instagram. It’s amazing what kind of inspiration you can find on that thing!

Casein provides a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. (While you sleep 7-8 hrs) This provides better nitrogen retention and use by the body.Because of its slow digesting properties, casein is widely used between meals and before bed to help bodybuilders maintain muscle in an anabolic state

So this was my dinner/dessert;)

1 scoop Banana smoothie Casein

1 tbsp unflavored gelatin ( to add thickness)

1/2-1 cup hot almond milk (depending n how thick you want it )

1 tbsp pb2

Blend together, and stick it in the fridge. In an hour or two, check it. It should be thick.
This is soooo delicious, and was exactly what my body needed after my workout, before bed.

Here’s the stocked up fridge after $100. Trader joes is my Jam! I got soooooo much clean food for just $100, that’s what’s up! The best part is, it will last me all week.

Ok, enough with last night ;)

TODAY’S EATS:

This morning’s breakfast was, again, inspired by Instagram. A microwave chocolate banana protein cake. Susanna Backman ( a trainer/nutritional coach) @tastyhealth has got amazing low carb, high protein ideas for every meal. You gotta follow her, and tell her From Fries To Fit is gushing about her ;)

This was a dream. I mean… Cake for dinner!? Yes, I think so y’all.
Listen carefully though, this cake is super easy, but also easy to OVERCOOK.

INGREDIENTS:

In chocolate bowl:

1/2 a scoop chocolate About Time Whey
1/4 tsp baking powder
2 tsp coconut flour
1/8-1/4 cup water
1 tbsp 0% Greek yogurt
Optional: add a couple drops of stevia if you like it a bit sweeter

In banana bowl:

1/2 scoop banana About Time Whey
1/4 tsp baking powder
2 tsp coconut flour
1/8-1/4 cup water
1tbsp 0% greek yogurt

Topping:
1 tbsp raw almond butter
Drizzle Natures Hollow sugar free honey
Cacao nibs

DIRECTIONS:

Add dry ingredients first to both bowls, mix each well, then, add wet ingredients to each bowl. Once combined, add chocolate mix into banana mix, and use a knife to give a swirl effect.
Pop in the microwave for 30 seconds. Check it at this point, as this lil puppy over cooks super fast. Add 20-30 more seconds. It should be rising at this point. Remove, plate, and top with almond butter, honey and cacao nibs.

I didn’t have to work till ten today, so I managed to get some meal prepping done for the week.
Honestly, I don’t wanna hear that you ” just, don’t have the time” cuzzzzzzz you do. I managed to prep 4 full meals in 20 mins! It can be done people.

Lean turkey patties with only 8 grams of fat, 0 carbs, and 18 grams of protein

Cooked in a 1 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil.

Seasoned with garlic powder, 21 salute seasoning, salt & pepper.

As those were on the skillet, I pre heated the oven to 350 degrees, tossed a bag of broccoli with a pinch of olive oil, lots of lemon, and seasonings, and threw it in there to cook for 18 minutes.

While in the oven, I took advantage of the open burners, and hard boiled eggs in one, and sautéed collard greens with leeks, onions, garlic in the other.

All under 20 minutes. I love clean eating… Seriously, it’s easy to eat healthy:)

EACH LUNCH CONSISTED OF:

I put one patty, a side of broccoli, and sautéed greens topped with fat free feta in each Tupperware.
2 hard boiled eggs
1/2 cup blueberries
A 100 calorie pack of almonds.
A handful of cut up cucumbers with lemon and seasoning.

Oh, and, I almost forgot…I don’t eat lunch without my live salsa. Pretty much fermented veggies. Sounds gross, but it’s the bomb! Full of enzymes and probiotics.

Tonight’s DINNER:

Ooooooooohhhhhhhhweeeeee! Holy protein dinner of champions. Essentially, a sweet egg crepe. I know, so happy right now. I posted this on my Instagram, and it was a hit! I had it for breakfast the other day, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the next time this heavenly treat would once again meet my lips! Sooooo, tonight it is ;) This girl’s gone WILD over here. What’s up with me lately, I swear, it’s allllll about sweet dinners. Oh well, as long as its healthy right?

Ok, this is so simple, and delicious.

INGRIDIENTS:

The wrap:

1 egg

5 egg whites

A pinch of Cinnamon

3 drops stevia

The filling:

1 tbsp low fat cottage cheese

1 tbsp Raw almond butter

1/2 a cut up banana

Top with chopped almonds and sprinkled with unsweetened coconut flakes.

Go ahead….eat the whole thing.. That’s right, and enjoy every second of it, cuz it’s nothin’ but good for ya! I broke up the amount of nut butter with some cottage cheese in order to reduce the fat content, and add a bit of a softer texture.
What do u think? I think you should eat this tomorrow morning…. It’s really amazing how this is actually in your diet plan. Tastes so naughty!

DESSERT:

Vanilla Casein “Panna Cotta”

Same recipe as last nights dessert, except this time with vanilla flavored casein. I couldn’t wait for it to thicken up in the fridge, so I put it In the freezer for 10 minutes, or until panna cotta consistency. This is by far, my favorite meal of the day… My ” before bed” treat. My muscles will be happy;)

On a fitness note:

I managed to pull out a quick core exercise with my Lebert equalizer.

Really, it’s more of a full body workout because you are using more than just your core to hold yourself up the whole time.

So far, I’m on track with my weekly workout schedule. I’m wearing my polar watch to keep track of my calories burned, and I’m planning my meals ahead of time. How are things going with you guys? Tonight’s agenda: BODYSCULPTING. 1 hour of circuit training, with bands, weights, lunging, crunching,squatting, you name it. I burned 350 right there. Stoked!

After class, me and J. FIT practiced planking on each other. Lol. Check her Facebook page out. It’s fantastic, and full of great info!

Goodness..today is FULL of newness! Lol

I got a new look y’all! What do you think? I got a fringe! Well…”bangs” as we say here in America;)
I was just really getting tired of me look, and working at a salon, you have the advantage to just act on impulse, and say ” eff it, just cut it!”
You see, I wanted a change without cutting off all my hair, so this was a perfect compromise;)
I’ve decided that 70′s fringe is back!

As you know, I just celebrated my 29th birthday. Thank u, thank u…
And in today’s look, I’m sporting prezzies from my besties!

Can you tell it’s the holidays!? It’s all about food this week. I took off yesterday and today from the gym, and I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been indulging in EVERY way possible! I know I’ll be paying for it later, but, let me just have my “WHATEVER” moment, ok. I’m not the only one who falls off during this time of year.

The shenanigans started last night when I met up with me friend Cale, who I feel like I haven’t seen in ages. I went by his place after work yesterday, and we caught up over a great bottle of wine. Cale is a an amazing hairstylist. I’ve known him since we were, I don’t know, something like 14-15 years old.We both studied at the Vidal Sassoon Academy. After I finished school, I actually ended up staying there and becoming an instructor, and he was my student. He gets mad when I tell people that I was his teacher;) He is now is a successful stylist, working at John Frieda and also working freelance. PROUD.

We walked over to a local favorite spot, Comme Ca. French food is my ultimate demise. I just can’t resist. A total fave! We both are complete foodies, so this is where the indulging really began….

We started with a delicious French red, and shared a delicious array of cheeses and charcuterie. I swear if I could eat just that for the rest of my life, I would die happy! And YES, I ATE LOTS OF BREAD. Bread lady for dayyyyys!

For my entree, I ordered SEARED DIVER SEA SCALLOPS with
potato gnocchi, wild mushroom, swiss chard. I mean…..how could I resist. Cooked to perfection.

Oh no, the battle of the binge didn’t end there…..
The next day was our annual Sassoon Holiday Pot Luck. I get scared when these pot lucks come around. I completely lose my shit. It is like slow torture. I couldn’t seem to get away from it! Cakes, cookies, dips, just all gnarlyness!!!
I was beyond, BEYOND bad today.

We’ve got a Moroccan in the house, so she brought her famous lamb tagine, which was completely authentic, took hours to complete, and tasted divine.

It’s almost embarrassing that this just keeps going, cuz yes, I did participate in eating all that you see here. And lots. Boss made Chinese chicken salad, that was gone in 15 minutes.

The famous peanut butter cookies that Matthew’s mom makes. We all swoon over them, because they are irresistible. I took some home to share with the farm tomorrow:) my brother obsesses over peanut butter, so I’m sure he’ll appreciate:) I won’t a tell you how many I had. I was From fit to Fries today.

SASSOON “Downtown” Collection workshop & BIKRAM

So excited to announce the launch of the new Sassoon collection “Downtown”. Just like in fashion we have collections that come out to the public every spring/summer, autumn
/winter, and a mid season. It’s a very exciting time for hairdressers all around the world who are avid followers of Vidal Sassoon, but especially for us who work for the company.

 

Generally, the concepts for the new collections come from our international team based out of London. Our international creative director, Mark Hayes does a great job of really listening to the teams from all of the Sassoon salons for inspiration.

 

 

 

 

For every collection that launches, every team has an evening where we all get together, usually a Wednesday after work, and display the new looks inspired from the collection on our own models. New techniques, new colors, and with the looks being pretty avaunt guard, we make sure to find models who are seriously open for big changes, that is the exciting part!

Hair, great hair, can really build an image for someone. These looks are usually pretty bold and daring and can really put someone’s confidence to the test. So we try to find people who will rock some amazing looks .

My model, Ruth, was adorable . She had recently moved here from London, and was very familiar with the Sassoon model/haircut set up. She was super cool and open to whatever I wanted to do. Blank canvas. Ahhhhhhhh, that is the best. Let me know what you guys think??

She said the only thing she wanted me to know, was that she was horrible at styling her own hair (she doesn’t own a hair dryer) and wanted something with no fuss. My kinda girl, it’s funny, I’m a hairdresser yet, I never style my own hair, meaning I always make sure my haircuts have no at-home maintenance. You see, I have wavy hair, so If it’s cut right, I can just let it air dry out of the shower, and it looks great.

Well, her texture was pretty similar to mine, so it was fun seeing how her hair was moving and adapting as we cut it.

Since I was really tired and busy this morning, I skipped my ritual Wednesday morning workout and figured I could stop at the gym on my way home. Ugh, I hate working out at night. I’m definitely a morning sweat sesh type person, so I was already annoyed about that, plus it was now 7:30 pm. It was a long day.

Wellllllllllllll……a couple of the girls at work are into Bikram yoga and mentioned that they were going to a class later on that night. I was thinking ” what the hell time is this class?.”
Turns out….. Yeah, 10 freakin PM!!! I’m usually asleep by then, like a total G-ma, but I was determined to get some kind of workout in, so It took everything in me to agree to go. You know how it is. When you get home from work, all you wanna do is get cozy, watch your favorite show, catch up on stuff, eat a nice meal and pour a glass of wine. I swear I almost passed out tired waiting to leave the house. It would’ve been a lot easier if we had done the 8p.m class, but nooooooo.

Ok I’m done complaining, I made it.

Those of you who are not familiar with Bikram yoga,

Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional hatha yoga[1] techniques and popularized beginning in the early 1970s.[2][3] Bikram Yoga sessions run for exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises.[4] Bikram Yoga is ideally practiced in a room heated to 105°F (≈ 40.6°C) with a humidity of 40%,[5] and is the most popular form of hot yoga (a series of yoga poses done in a heated room).

Ok so, I have to admit, yoga has never been my thing or on the top of my training list. I maybe just haven’t found the right fit, as far as the style of yoga of the right teacher for me, but I keep trying. I do feel good after class but I do think this particular class is too long. 90 minutes. Also I think that I wasn’t in the right mind frame, especially with it being so late for me. I also felt like this style of practice focused a lot more on breathing techniques and flexibility poses. We were doing lots of back bending type stuff, that I don’t think I should’ve been doing seeing as it was only my second class ever. Sometimes are bodies are just not conditioned to be bent backwards, you know.(my neck was killing me after) What I’m trying to say is that, I think I’m just more of a ” I need to be jumping around like a crazy, or lifting like a beast type person” but I do know this, if you are like me,
It isimportant to vary the way you train. Add a day of a good stretching class, a low impact yoga or Pilates sesh wouldn’t hurt. We are all guilt of not always being aware of stretching after a workout, slowing down and focusing more on the breath, and taking more time to adjust your form and posture.

Like any workout, I think that yoga doesbring something really good to your life, especially for the everyday. How many times have you accidentally caught yourself in the mirror with the worst posture? Huh? Or realized you were sticking your stomach out as if you had a food baby? Yoga is something that helps to encourage better alignment and a stronger sense of being centered.

With all that preaching, I’ve decided I am more of a Core Power yoga type rather than the Bikram type.
